From Riyadh… A Step Towards More Sustainable Cities

Recently, while following the latest news in architecture and sustainability, one announcement from the Riyadh Municipality caught my attention.
They have officially banned the use of aluminum composite panels (commonly known as cladding) for building façades.

At first glance, this might seem like just a change in building materials.
But for me – and for anyone passionate about sustainable design – it’s a major step forward.

This decision supports three main goals:

• Improving the urban landscape, making the city more visually harmonious.

• Preserving Riyadh’s architectural identity and avoiding visual clutter.

• Promoting sustainable design principles and reducing environmental impact.

Why is cladding a problem?

The municipality explained that cladding does not meet Riyadh’s approved urban identity requirements.
They have instructed all engineering and consulting offices to avoid including it in any new designs starting from 17 Dhu al-Qi’dah 1446 AH.

This move builds on a previous decision in 2016 by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, which banned the use of non-fire-resistant cladding in new buildings for public safety reasons.

How this relates to LEED standards

If you’re familiar with LEED standards, you know that material selection is a core part of sustainable design. Global sustainability frameworks focus on:

• The quality of materials and their environmental impact.

• Integrating local identity with energy efficiency.

• Designing with health and safety in mind.

From this perspective, Riyadh’s decision is perfectly aligned with the principles of LEED – the exact approach we advocate for at LEEDtricks.
